Old jeans to Stokx Flirt Skirt

Yes, I still seem to be awash in deconstructed jeans so I thought I’d make a Stokx Flirt skirt. This seemingly small skirt takes quite a bit of fabric and it took the legs of 3 pairs of jeans to create it.

I wanted to vary the colour of denim, so chose light and dark denims, this is how they looked when I auditioned them.

These jeans came from op shops in various country towns, and the more oddly shaped ones were on the free rack, which is where things are placed before they are sent to the local landfill.

I wore the skirt for coffee with a friend on a very cold and windy day, so teamed it with my “St Andrews” jumper and my jacket made from a pink blanket using a pattern from Liz Haywood’s e-zine called A Year of Zero Waste Sewing. This pattern is from the March edition and is called the Make it Modular Jacket. Here is my original post about this jacket.

Sorry for the blurry photo but I was on the move. I love how the skirt shows the different colours of the denim when it’s twirling.

I had a play with some other coordinating garments and denim was an obvious choice. The Tauko Centrefold, pairs well with it.

The hem looks as though it’s lined with crinoline as the bottom of the skirt is held out, but I actually used waistbands which are quite sturdy and therefore hold the shape of the hem. I’m not sure whether I love this, but will leave it for the time being.

I do like the effect of the waistbands though, and there is even a buttonhole still in there.

I’m really happy with my choice of jeans colour, I think the light and dark shows up the shape of the skirt. That stripe along one of the panels is where I removed a reflective strip.

The skirt looks different every time I try it on. I put it on with my Pattern Union Felix jacket and really like these two together. This photo also shows the back pocket, which came from one of the pairs of jeans, of course!

My Pattern Union Cora blouse also looks great with the skirt.

And finally with my favourite  jumper from a Hanne Falkenberg kit which I bought in Stockholm. It is called “Studio”

You’ll notice the heart on the bottom of the skirt, which is part of the Sewdoitforheart initiative, promoting awareness of women’s heart health. After I took these photos I did some additions to the skirt. I added a label to the heart which I had harvested from a pair of jeans and am absolutely delighted with it.

I also added a KATM label to the back pocket. i had to hand stitch it as I couldn’t get my machine into the gap.

And used a harvested metal zip instead of the invisible zip as prescribed. I’m not sure if this was the right thing to do as sewing a lapped zip on this fabric challenged me for some reason. Not my finest work but the two sides do match up at the top in real life.

Finally, two little girls playing with an outsized Father Christmas suit made by my mother, I’m amazed at what they’ve got stored in that pram!
