Reversible petal jacket

I’ve previously reported the very generous parcel (in fact two parcels) of patterns sent to me by Sally @baylissblanche from the US, and as soon as I saw this little jacket I knew I wanted to make it. It’s by Sew Baby and is really sweet.

I invited Miss G and her Mum round and asked them to choose fabrics for this, I needed two as it’s a reversible jacket. Bridgette immediately chose a vintage tartan brushed cotton for one side and a gorgeous vintage pin cord for the other side.

The pin cord has a white background with blue flowers. The little hood has bear ears on one side of the jacket, and there is ribbing round the face to pull it in, which I think is a wonderful idea. It’s capelike but has sleeves, and we chose the rounded edge rather than the petals.

The inside looks like this, and you’ll notice that I didn’t manage to pattern match all the way down the front. This, I think, is because when I examined the fabric I thought it was a bit grubby.. I scoured, soaked and washed it, and it was actually filthy. It’s now squeaky clean but the fabric warped very badly with all the terrible treatment. I pulled and stretched it into some sort of submission, but there was no way I could pattern match. I also didn’t have very much and this pattern uses a lot, so there’s a section that is cut on the cross grain, although it’s a very symmetrical design so it’s not obvious.

I used snaps as they are perfect for a reversible closure. I had very well matched blue snaps, which was nice. As always, I had a problem with the last snap, and used the really useful snap removal tool given to me by Jenny @JoeandRoxy. It actually cuts a central plug from the snap, leaving the hole and surrounding fabric in perfect condition.

The hood has a collar at the front with a snap so the neck can be warm if it’s windy or it can be left open.

The sleeves are quite long and are intended that way so there’s some growing room. They are designed to be rolled up, showing the other side. I’m trying to show the ears on the hood here, and just the way the jacket hangs.

And Miss G was quite happy with it. I tried to get her to have the hood up, but I think she was a bit hot – these photos were taken whilst the weather was still warm.

Isn’t it adorable? I can’t wait for the weather to cool down so she has some chance of wearing it. If I ever make another one I will add a couple of patch pockets as this is a girl who loves pockets.

All of the fabric and notions for this came from my stash.

I’ve spent quite a while trying to upload different versions of Little E playing the tongue drum. She really loves it but the drumsticks spend more time in her mouth than playing. I think she has talent though!
