Pyjamas for Miss G and Esme

When Sally @baylissblanche sent me a large cache of children’s patterns, I immediately began looking for some winter appropriate things to make and thought pyjamas would be nice. I had quite a lot of vintage pink floral flannelette that had belonged to my mother and from which I had made pyjamas for myself. Miss G loved it, of course!

I chose View A, and began looking at the pattern pieces. I noticed that Sally had shortened the pattern pieces and taken a fair bit off the width of each piece. I wondered if she was making for a particularly small child and then noticed a note she’d made about checking commercial sizing. I got out my Winifred Aldrech book – bought for 50c at the Bridgetown op shop – and looked at the sizing for a 3 year old and I could see that had I made the pattern with the original sizing it may have fit her when she was six! I am so grateful for Sally’s notations, they make such a difference and I can really recommend this book for anyone making for children, it has a lot of useful information.

Once I sorted out the sizing, the pyjamas came together quickly.

I used a Kylie and the Machine label.

I decided to make a pair of matching pyjamas from some of the scraps. These are for the Liz Haywood zero waste doll, and the clothes are included in the pattern.

The doll is called Esme and she looks pretty swish in her new pyjamas. I added a little bed jacket/bathrobe as well. Teddy is from A Sewing Life and is a free pattern when you subscribe to Lisa’s newsletter.

they look cute together.

I did have some reservations about the depth of the rise, and checked against Winifred’s measurements. The legs were perfect but the rise seemed much too long. I tried them on Miss G and had to take 7cms off. the legs are pretty baggy and I may run them in as well.

Miss G was quite funny. She put the pyjamas on (in the middle of the afternoon) and left them on for the rest of the day. She loved Esme’s outfit and put her straight to bed, with the chicken I note!

Her Mum took these photos of her dressing and undressing Esme. So cute!

these photos do gladden my heart. I shall make her a dressing gown from the same pattern quite soon.

This photo made me laugh. it’s Mother’s Day and the family were all at our house. Miss G loves playing hide and seek and I was to find her. It wasn’t too hard…!

    1. thanks Linda, I love the Kylie labels too. Matching PJs for the doll is a fun thing and she spotted my matching PJs the other day and was so excited!

  1. I have just that pattern. I think I’ve skipped using it because of the sizing. I’ve been using an old Style 3264 skirt pattern size 4 for my granddaughter who is 9, up until recently and she is a tall girl, but slim. I’ll have to move onto the size 6 pattern for her this year 😉 I have recently made the KwikSew 3101 raglan sleeve loose sweatshirt type tops for all three of my grandchildren and that’s been a great success. I try to keep a book of their measurements handy as I don’t often see them, and I do often have to lengthen a smaller size for them due to slimness. Hope all is going well. Trish S

    1. Thanks Trish, it is ridiculously oversized but it was good to have a modified pattern. I’ll look out for the Kwiksew pattern.
