New LBD (long black dress)

A couple of weeks ago I made this long black dress and have worn it so often that the black is beginning to fade from washing.

The pattern is the sloper from Pattern Magic, made into an A-line shape. Unfortunately I was about 10cms short and my ankles poke out from underneath, but I’m learning to live with it.

The dress is not intended to be worn on its own, rather it is a layering piece. I am just showing it here so you can see that it’s a bit of a shapeless sack. Underneath floaty evening tops, however, it works really well.

I thought I’d wear it for Me-Made-May as I’ve worn it more in the day than in the evening. Today (day four) I’ve teamed it with a Tammer Shrug, pattern and yarn from Dairing, Melbourne. I also wore the bracken dyed dress underneath to provide some warmth as it’s getting chilly here.

I did a small sway back adjustment and think I could have removed a bit more, but, given that it’s covered up most of the time, I am not concerned about this.

This was a simple make. I did the whole thing on the overlocker, including the turned down neckline and hems, which I coverstitched. This is the perfect long black dress for cooler months and I anticipate wearing it a lot over winter.

In a nutshell: Long black dress modified from Pattern Magic sloper. Fabric is modal and came from the Fabric Store in Auckland. The Tammer Shrug is from a pattern and yarn supplied from Dairing in Melbourne.

  1. This is great. Looks good, feels comfy and is very versatile. It is similar to the StyleArc Tammy, which has a back centre seam to possibly help fit issues if you are concerned (which you needn’t be). I hadn’t thought of using the Tammy pattern for a winter dress, but now I’m hatching a plan!

  2. I think I need to make this dress. Maybe I should just copy your whole wardrobe Sue! Tis obviously a very useful layering piece… And gorgeous slim ankles by the way!
    See you on Wednesday!

  3. Simple and effective. This length makes you look sooo tall, even with flats! Love this kind of dress you make in the blink of an eye and then get to wear extensively. Don’t you want to make a “real” wintry one in soft merinos jersey? This would be so luxurious.

  4. I can understand why you are washing and wearing this so much – it is a fabulous dress for just about any circumstance. Enjoy it, and make another so you always have one ready to wear 😉
