Fibremood Sanna

The latest edition of the Fibremood Magazine has now been released (ed 37) and I chose to make the Sanna as I thought it would be a useful trans-seasonal garment. It has a kimono sleeve and therefore needs wider fabric than a set in sleeve, but the cuffs have a cute pleated detail, bringing the sleeve in at the wrist. It has a faced neckline, which extends down the centre back seam, which is shaped, creating little peepholes, which I didn’t know if I’d like, but I really do!

I decided to use a tablecloth which I think is from the 1970s (maybe). It’s a beautiful cotton damask which also has stripes woven into it. Of course I couldn’t tell the right side from wrong, so had to guess!

I was a bit short of fabric so had to reduce the length of the top, but I think that’s fine as I have a short body. I spent quite a lot of time laying out the pattern trying to (a) match stripes and (b) maximise the stripes. In the end the checked squares in the corners finished up on the cuffs, which I was a bit disappointed with, but the only way round that was to have a centre seam at the front, which I really didn’t want.

I had to give myself a stern talking to as I was fretting about wasting this tablecloth if it all went wrong. I was concerned about sizing – I made a small and it still seemed huge, and I was concerned about stripe matching. Deep breath and in I went.

Naturally I have no in progress shots, but I’m pleased to say that this went together really easily, no unpicking required and I found a coolish day to take photographs. And the fit? Perfect.

I was pleased with my stripe matching, and particularly pleased with the chevron effect on the sleeves.

A closeup of the damask. It’s quite an interesting design.

The top goes really well with my orange Stokx Square pants, although it looks plain white from a distance!

A closeup of the back in action. I had used the selvedge at the bottom thinking I wouldn’t need to hem, but I didn’t like the white band, so it’s been hemmed to the edge of the stripe.

It also goes beautifully with my Fibremood Fulki skirt.

Please note that it also goes well with my new Solace leather bag!

I couldn’t resist trying it with my white denim Itch to Stitch Danube skirt. And of course the bag!

I know I’ve been moaning about the way the pattern on the tablecloth fell on this top, but now that I look at the photos I don’t think it could have been used better.

After all these photos were taken I decided where I would put my heart to raise awareness of women’s heart health. I added it to the back seam, which is subtle but still noticeable.

And finally a girl and her dog. These two are obsessed with each other!

and our girl doing some somersaults as she dives in. I couldn’t do this at four!

  1. I love the picture with the dog. So cute. What a great idea for using the tablecloth. I think it looks so interesting the way it turned out with the stripes effect. Happy sewing.
