It’s Denim December over on Sew A Garment A Month on Instagram and I just couldn’t imagine making a denim garment for summer, so made a doll’s dress (reveal soon), but then I went looking for a white skirt and realised that mine had seen better days, so had the lightbulb moment – I can make a white denim jeans skirt.
I remembered the Itch to Stitch Danube jeans skirt pattern, which I’ve made twice before (here), but thought I’d give it a centre back vent instead of side vents.
I had white denim which had been a long term resident of my stash, and I had enough. Joy!
Years ago I was given a bag with a jeans button and two rivets and I decided it was time I used them.

I used the two rivets on the corners of the pockets. I didn’t have enough for the coin pocket.
As the denim has stretch, I decided to go down a size and the fit is pretty spot on. I teamed it with a hacked Pattern Union cora blouse made from a scarf given to me by my friend Hélène when I visited her in Montreal.

I took these photos after I’d been wearing the skirt for a day, so I’m a bit rumpled. I used the pattern for a vent from a skirt I had drafted by Sarah at Pattern Union. The pattern is for a lined skirt, so I just used the outer part. It worked superbly.

I added a blue denim heart for the Sew Do it for Heart challenge. I did a bit of unpicking on the waistband and cut a hole in it, which I covered with this handily sized scrap of washable paper which I had marbled.

I added the year of making, as I find it quite useful further down the line.

Being a white skirt I had to team it with white tops and pretend I was emulating the Pantone colour of the year. I also made my white sandals.

I’ve already worn the skirt a few times and teamed it with different things:
My Marimekko zero waste jacket

I love it with the Indigo dyed Fibremood Quilla. Also denim sandals made by me.

I also enjoyed it with the mordanted top I made at Fibreswest 2023.

Pepper came for a visit and showed her approval of the skirt in her own unique way!
I love the side eye – it’s because she knows she’s not supposed to be on the furniture. I’ve given up!
Very nice. Now I want one! I’ve got a piece of pink denim and now you’ve shown me exactly what to do with it! Looks like such a handy and comfortable garment. Like the tops you’ve put with it too! Happy sewing!
Thank you so much. I think pink denim would be very special.
Hi Sue
You are looking so great in all these outfits with the sun shining, it is rather grey over here. A white skirt is just a blanc canvas for everything and any colour can be associated.
Pepper is a lovely dog and everything is fine as long as she doesn’t personalizes the skirt with her teeth 😅.
Hearty greetings from the old world
Jeannine
I initially thought I might print on the fabric but the white is so handy. Pepper has moved to much further away so time with her is precious. I might even forgive a little chew…!
How lovely all-white looks in summer, so fresh. Equally as summery with coloured tops and sandals. A great skirt!
What’s the stunning red tree in the photo, Sue? I thought Japanese maple but wrong time of year. Flame tree?
Yes, it’s an Illawarra Flame Tree. So beautiful but we’ve lost a lot to the shothole borer. So sad. I’m thrilled with my skirt, it goes with everything.
