Itch to Stitch Belize skort

I didn’t think I’d ever have a skort in my wardrobe again. I wore them in the ’70s and the ’90s and possibly several points in between, and here I am trundling around in them with some delight, and a bit of trepidation – am I too old for this look? When did I start worrying about being too old – it’s such an ageing thing!!

Anyway, my skorts. I was delighted to be chosen to test the Itch-to-Stitch skort and immediately fossicked around in my stash to find suitable fabrics. I thought I’d make a little video of my first effort

This one is a little bit big, but still wearable. I used some leftover fabric and didn’t have quite enough for the waistband, so just used some black fabric I had in my scraps stash.

skorts

I began to panic about the length, so the next version was just a pair of shorts which I lengthened by 4cms. Clearly I couldn’t be bothered with shoes!

DSC08049 I also went down a size but, given that these are from stretch denim, I could probably go down another size. I also need to get rid of the storage creases…DSC08052

I then thought I’d try a woven version and used this fabric which I had bought at Potters as a remnant and which, on reflection, was a little weird so it has been malingering in the stash.

I could pretend these are a jeans refashion, given the print on the fabric!

These aren’t a skort – they have the skirt part at the front but the back is shorts as I didn’t have enough fabric, so this is View D.IMG_8024

Then I started seeing all the other pattern testers swanning around in the sunshine and decided I needed a winter pair. I immediately set about making some from pin cord denim left over from these jeans. This fabric may have been a little heavy, but I think it works.DSC08061

and the back view, and you can probably see why I’m a little concerned about wearing these in public, although I’m so going to! The shorts/skort have a flat front and elasticated back. This makes them extremely comfortable and I think I shall be wearing them often.

So, the pattern – as with all Itch-to-Stitch patterns, this one is really well designed. Everything aligns brilliantly and the way those points at the front are mitred is beautiful. It’s a pretty quick make, especially if you just choose the simple shorts option. There are five views and I think that there is something here for everyone:

Belize Shorts & Skort Feature:

  • Sits at natural waist
  • Relaxed fit
  • Elastic side and back waist
  • Medium-length in-seam (4 1/2” to 5 3/4”, or 11.4 cm to 14.6 cm)
  • View A: Pleated-front shorts with front pockets
  • View B: Flat-front shorts with front pockets
  • View C: Flat-front shorts with no pocket
  • View D: Skort with front pockets and shorts back
  • View E: Skort with front pockets and skirt back
  • Layers feature (print only the sizes you need)

The pattern is also on sale at the moment, so it’s a good time to grab one and either make shorts or a skort for winter, summer or any time of the year really!

  1. My thoughts exactly Elizabeth! You look great in shorts Sue and they’ll be perfect for your bush retreat too.

  2. I think they look great, I especially like the pin cord one agree with Elizabeth. It’s the first time I’ve seen this pattern, it looks very quirky which is a good thing in book.

  3. I was about to make the same comment as Elizabeth. Don’t worry about being too old to wear them – they look great.(and I really can’t imagine you in old lady clothes so don’t go there!)
The skirt overlay is a very interesting shape. I like ’em!

  4. Sue you have fabulous legs and look great in the skorts.
(Most twenty year olds do not have legs as good as yours!)
    Interesting pattern! Works very well.

  5. You have certainly given this pattern a good work out Sue. All your versions look great and show off your lovely legs beautifully. I love the winter ones worn with tights too. Very chic.

  6. Super cute Sue!!! I usually do not jump on a new pattern bandwagon, but you’ve inspired me to get this one!!! And with your legs and style, you will never be too old to wear anything you want to wear! Great Video too! 🙂 P.S. I wore Skorts too in the day, and always loved them.

    1. I am so pleased, Lisa. I always worry when I test patterns that I won’t do someone’s hard work justice, so it thrills me when someone likes what I’ve made. Having said that, I can hold my hand on my heart and say that this is a great pattern and you won’t regret buying it!

  7. You’re certainly the best ambassador for this new pattern. I love all your versions, especially the winter ones. BTW, I was also fond of skorts in the 90s and I’m so glad they’re back. Let’s not spoil our pleasure. This style is perfect for women of all ages as long as the styling is good.

  8. I agree- if you’ve got it- flaunt it- great legs no matter what age! Love all your variations!

  9. You’ve got the legs to wear them. They all look great on you. The denim version is really great and the corduroy fabric is something you wouldn’t expect to be a fabric for this type of fabric, but yours proves it can be done.

  10. So many fabulous skorts! I’m definitely getting this pattern. Despite living through the 90s, I never wore skorts — at the time, I didn’t wear shorts *or* skirts, much less a garment that was both of those things. Looking forward to trying the trend now. The video was very helpful, and what pushed me to get this pattern, so thanks for making it!

  11. Very very beautiful. I ordered the pattern a couple of days before and looking forward to sewing it. Thanks for showing such good examples. Usually I do not wear shorts, but hopefully skords are a good alternative.

    1. I have my corduroy skort on at the moment and it is so comfortable. It is such an easy make and I think would look good on everyone. Enjoy yours!

  12. I love the winter corduroy version too,a nd the first pair in that black and white print is pretty gorgeous too! The winter version looks super cute with tights and those adorable shoes. A fabulous outfit all over 🙂
