This week in my pattern making class at Workspace-FADS I made a new block for a pencil skirt. I am always amused that, among the details written on the pattern, the size is written down as “Sue”.
The skirt is a classic pencil shape except that it tapers in slightly at the bottom, preventing the slightly boxy look that I often get with pencil skirts. I was supposed to leave vents in the side seams, but I forgot, but figured that the slight stretch in the fabric would mean that I would be able to walk; I was correct! The basic block came from Winifred Aldrich’s book “Metric Pattern Cutting for Women’s Wear” and this is the third block I have made using this book as the guide.
I used a small remnant of cotton/lycra jean weight fabric which I bought at Knitwit and which has been lurking in the stash for a fair old while.
It is probably a little longer than I would normally wear, but I think it looks a bit more elegant at this length.
I added a couple of pockets which I bound with black bias binding to give a bit of contrast. I decided against in seam pockets as this skirt is quite fitted and I didn’t want the bulk at my hips.
I used a facing at the waist instead of a waistband, which I bound with bias binding, and I also bound the hem with bias to help it lay flat.
Clearly this bit of sewing has exhausted me as I need the tree for support!

The details: Skirt is self drafted using the block from Winifred Aldrich. Fabric is cotton/lycra jeans fabric. Top is Bluegingerdoll Bonnie top made from a thick pure wool knit that Mark bought in Hobart (and which I haven’t blogged before). Ankle boots are Georgio Armani from Dimario Shoes, Subiaco.

The skirt, in fact your whole outfit looks so chic! I love the skirt fabric too, very cool. Your remark about being size Sue made me think of my latest project, which I marked with my initials; I was tempted to joke that CS stood for “Carolyn Sized” Perhaps I should have done so!
